Musings on Life, the Christian Journey and being a part of Planetshakers City Church

Why Blog This?

with 6 comments

I blog about Planetshakers City Church because I feel passionately about the church.

There’s so much it does so well.

However, in the light of recent incidents, and my growing un-ease around current church culture (around areas that will turn cancerous if left unchecked during Planetshakers’ rapid growth), it’s time to start an intelligent conversation about the church.

Why online? Why not quietly, and within the church itself?

Unfortunately, current Planetshakers church culture doesn’t take kindly to any level of questioning. Questioning is seen as disunity, and disunity is subversive, and subversiveness is a cancer, and cancers should be cut out of the church.

So it’s because I like Planetshakers, I want to remain at the church, but I want to see positive improvements to church culture, that I’ve taken my musings online.

  1. If we all shut-up like Pastors want us to, there would never have been a Reformation, no Revivals, no Jury system, no Parliamentary system, no free countries like the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia; and the USA would not exist. It’s called control. It’s based on fear. And it’s wrong. But there’s a right way to confront an issue. Privately, first.

  2. You’re right – quietly would be best.

Unfortunately, Planetshakers just doesn’t want to hear about it – as we’ve heard in Ps Russell Evans’ sermons where he spoke about the person he kindly asked to leave the church after she criticized the way [something] was run at the church.

This quiet little web blog might just be quiet enough to start a discussion on this though.

  3. Hi person who remains anonymous,

My earlier post was ‘over emotional’?? I think that to have already come to the place where you do not feel emotional about Mike’s lies and betrayal is the emotionally fraught area.

I guess I don’t get why if it is your goal to champion change in the church, you won’t put your name to it. I accept that you’re committed to Planetshakers, I accept even that your motives are good – these latest posts today show that clearly – but there still seems to be a gap – unless of course this blog is written by someone with something to hide?

If Jesus is all about the light, and your blog is about bringing things into the light that need to be seen, why not bring yourself in too? Really, why not?

I’m all for the changes your blog could bring about. Really, I am. More people need to stand up and be counted, but I know that the senior pastor of my previous church would not respond to letters that came in anonymously, as he felt that they lacked integrity.

And just to be clear, it is not unforgiving to say Mike is a porn addict who lied to people. That is what happened. That is what HE said has happened. What benefit is there in rushing to say we forgive you Mike, when there isn’t even time for people to feel the weight of what he has done? It is the same as a pregnant single rushing to the altar to marry, it doesn’t make the fact that they’ve sinned okay, although that seems to be the trend… to make things shiny because Jesus is all shiny and happy all the time and would be an awesome drummer… oh sorry, I totally forgot, it’s hard to see sarcasm on line!

I pray for a maturing of the faith of those who are hurt by this. I really do!

  4. I am shocked and devastated today to hear about Mike. I have know the family for 20 years and dearly love Danny and feel for both him, Sharon and Amanda. I remember wondering a few years back why he encouraged his wife to look like a porn star. Tight white Jeans, peroxide blonde hair and high heels the planet shakers stage looked more like a nightclub than a church.

A lot of judgement occurs of those less fortunate than the leaders who seem to have a new wardrobe each week (the females). After going through a tragedy I felt patronised and judged by those in the church. I think a hard lesson is being learned here.

Front rows are reserved for those who are beautiful, guests and those who give the most money to the church. A bit different to the humble church I now attend.

A sense of social justice is completely absent.

  5. Hey I just want to TQ for setting up this blog, i think its a great idea to remain positive cos there’s just so much great things about PS.

Its sad to hear about the confession today from Mike, i guess the only thing we can do is to pray and keep praying for him and his family and the people that has been under his ministry.

  6. Annette Hill, have u ever been misjudged and had ur name gossiped about and passed around church leadership? I highly doubt it.
Planetshakers wouldn’t know confidentiality if it hit them on the head.

I understand entirely why someone would want to remain anonymous in any dealings with this particular church, I sure do, and I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t…this church feels its their right to discuss and gather information about its members, under the guise of ‘prayer and covering’.
