Update on Planetshakers and Mike Guglielmucci – What Happens to the Music Now?

with 26 comments

Following on from my recent post Planetshakers and Mike Guglielmucci – What Happens to the Music Now?, it was revealed on Today Tonight:

I don’t have any desire to attain any financial gain from that, we’re already making stages to sign those royalties over…

It was also revealed that Mike Guglielmucci did not receive financial gain from his Today Tonight interview.

I’m glad that he accepted the offer of an honest interview with Today Tonight rather than having them hound him down and slander his name in usual disgraceful tabloid media style.

But at the same time, I wonder where this leaves Mike Guglielmucci now.

As I understand, the church has been most of his life. Now, he’s stripped of his credentials as a pastor, he’s signing back his song royalties, he’s handing back moneys to unhappy Christians who donated to his cause (keeping in mind that some [or perhaps much] of this money will have already been spent on Mike’s basic living costs).

And he’s just about to begin intensive psychological treatment – which may be overseas (as has been suggested by Mike’s renowned father, Danny Guglielmucci).

Who will support Mike in his rehabilitation?

Where will the money come from for Mike’s treatment?

Who will be there to support Amanda Guglielmucci – financially, spiritually and emotionally? She’s just received a massive shock when, roughly 2 weeks ago, her husband’s cancer was revealed to be a lie.

What will Mike do now, given that it’s unlikely that he’ll be restored fully in the eyes of man – like so many fallen pastors before him. At 28, he’s having to rebuild his life from nothing.

That is a big fall.

If you’re a believer, pray for the family, and pray for Mike Guglielmucci… It looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

  1. This is SO true. One thing that occurred to me was the story of King David… did God write off the Psalms as tainted or unworthy to be in the Bible, because David fell into serious sin? No. In many ways what has happened with Mike reminds me of David’s falling… David repented before God, but that was only when God used someone to blatantly point out his sin to him! Unlike so many “christian leadership scandals”, Mike was not “caught out” and “exposed”. He came to God and others as a broken man realising he would never be free unless he came clean about the realities.

    As in David’s case, consequences of pain & fire inevitably follow, but even in this, God’s work of healing & restoration can begin. I appluad Danny Guglielmucci for standing by his son at this time – a courageous stand for a pastor to take, at a time when so many are trying to wash their hands and say “I never knew him”.

    The crowd is cruel, and public responses (particularly in the media) have tended towards the phrase “crucify him”, metaphorically speaking. Billy Graham once pointed out that thousands of planes land safely at airports every day, but the media only takes notice when one crashes. Before this event, most non-christians would have ever heard of Mike. With the number of stories about this situation, he’s on the way to becoming a household name in Australia. I pray for God’s upholding strength in Mike’s life, and that He would be the HEALER Mike & so many others need at this time. Jesus is the “lifter of our head”.

    As David wrote in Psalm 40: “I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.”

  2. The song still rings true, because it is based on Bible truth. No matter what happens to the people around (since we are all humans with inherent defects in our human nature), the song can survive as a great worship song about our Healer.

  4. It doesn’t matter if some of the money went to “basis living costs”. It still rings true that he was being dishonest in one of the most terrible ways possible, deceiving people that trusted him. The money he used wasn’t for “basic living costs” like shaving cream or fruit loops it was for cancer treatment.

    My sister died of cancer and I know the pain my whole family went through.
    So to think that someone can be so heartless to pretend they have cancer….even to the point of using a breathing tube discussed me!

    While I do believe that as Christians we should forgive one another, it doesn’t mean we are to be blasé about it or forgive without trying to better the situation.

    So I believe that he should have been stripped of his credentials most certainly!
    I believe that he should try and make it right and give people their money back defiantly!

    I know he confessed, but why should we be thankful for that? He went on with this saga for years…of course the guilt got him in the end!
    Just the fact he didn’t die proves we would have found out!

    Yes we should pray for him and more importantly his family. We should also pray that our hearts deal with this news in the right way…the way Jesus would have.

  5. If you are reading this, please pray for Mike. No-one will ever quite know what happened/why it happened, but we can all pray for him, his family and indeed anyone who was hurt by this event. And plase don’t think grudgingly, he’s only human and has made a mistake.
    “Thankyou for forgiving us, as we forgive those who hace sinned aganst us.”
    God Bless.

  6. Mike’s confessed his sins shown that he is truly the man of God a man that after God’s own heart love Him and to walk with Him.
    Is not about the song he wrote, his position or his ministry.
    IS NOT ABOUT PLANETSHAKERS…planetshakers cannot change our lives without God.

    God can use a donkey to speak to us..who is Planetshakers they are just a vessel of God
    is not about going to conference getting pump up without knowing izzit God or just human emo…going out to the altar because the songs so emo???

    Is time to discern, we have the Holy Spirit in us so gel with the holy spirit rather thn man.

    God is doing something in this generation open up your eyes and get ready for great revival. IS ALL ABOUT HIM not MAN!!

    Cheers.

  7. Dan, you’re 100% right. I recommend you read through some more blog posts here, and some more comments, for a lot of people who agree with you.

    Our focus should be on God, not on Man.

  8. I agree that our focus should be on God and not man.

    The problem is that a lot of churches today say they ARE focused on God, they use lots of spiritual language… salvation, grace, blessing, healing, sin, spiritual warefare, forgiveness etc etc, all words that as Christians are very familiar with; BUT, these words are useless unless the GOSPEL is taught faithfully and truthfully. I’m not pointing the finger at any particular church or denomination (not at Planetshakers either for that matter) – but, can we as Christians agree on what the GOSPEL is so that we can be united?
    Forgive me if this seems a stupidly basic question to ask – but surely it’s a question that is fundamentally important???

    So, what is the Gospel?? My understanding is this (taken from ’2 ways to live’):

    1. God is the loving creator and ruler of the world. He made us rulers of the world under Him. (See Rev 4:11)

    2. We however reject God as ruler and want to run the world and our lives our own way. We call this SIN. (See Romans 3:10-12). But we fail to rule ourselves or society or the world. That’s why the world is so screwed up!!

    3. God is VERY ANGRY about this – His punishment for our rejection of Him is death and judgement. (See Hebrews 9:27)

    4. BUT – because of God’s great love He sent His Son into the world – JESUS CHRIST. Jesus always lived under God’s rule and never rebelled against God His Father. Yet by dying in our place he took our punishment and brought forgiveness. (See 1 Peter 3:18)

    This is the INCREDIBLE NEWS!! That Jesus died as a SUBSTITUTE for rebels like us! The debt that we owe God, Jesus paid by dying in our place. JESUS took the FULL FORCE of God’s justice, wrath and anger on Himself, so that forgiveness and pardon might be available to us!! We don’t deserve this forgiveness – its is a generous gift from start to finish!! But that’s not all…

    5. God raised JESUS to life again as the ruler of the world. JESUS has conquered death and He gives new life. Jesus will also return to judge. (See 1 Peter 1:3)

    So where does that leave us??

    6. There are two choices we have – we can:
    a) Reject God as ruler and try to live our own way – the result of that is we are condemned by God and face death, His judgement and hell.

    or

    b) We can live God’s new way – submit our lives to JESUS as our ruler, relying on His death and resurrection. The result of this is God forgives us of our sins, we don’t have to face God’s righteous anger and His judgement. (See John 3:36)

    By submitting our lives to Jesus God accepts Jesus’ death as payment for our rebellion (SIN) and He freely and completely forgives us!! He pours His Spirit into our hearts and grants us new life. We become part of God’s own family – adopted as His sons & daughters. We live with Jesus as our ruler and friend.

    What amazing Good News!! The GOSPEL. This is what unites us a Christians!! Let’s get back to basics and tell everyone this Good News!! AMEN!!

  9. I know this is why we don’t put our faith in men. I’m not perfect either. But while we are praying, let’s pray for all those lost or struggling with their faith to whom so many of us gave this song or shared the video. How do you now go to someone with whom you used this story or song as a witnessing tool or encouragement and explain that it was all a lie? In the eyes of unbelievers or those struggling with thier faith, it’s just one more reason not to trust Christians, or for that matter God. The damage done to ministries like Planet Shakers and Hillsong with so much opportunity to influence the world for Christ is immeasurable. While my heart is broken for Mr. Guglielmucci and his family, I am angry, and I hurt for those who may now reject the message of salvation through Jesus because of this man’s lies.

  10. Has anyone out there while they were praying for mike ever got a picture, or a thought or a dream about Mike, possibly of his deception, but were too cautious to say anything? Its kinda scary to think that AOG exec board members laid hands on Him & didn’t discern, or did they?

  11. Good blog. I agree with people, Mike needs our prayers more than ever now.
    So do the people this has hurt. His family & friends, people who believed him & came to God because of his message..

    What has surprised me is looking through sites on the net & seeing the comments of young people who I thought this would greatly affect & seeing that a lot of them are not losing faith in God even though someone who was possibly one of their ‘hero’s’ fell. I thought for sure there would be more negative comments from youth.

  12. i am a baby christian. when i heard about it, i was really shocked. one of the reasons i’m attracted to the movement i belong now is because they use music of planetshakers as worship and praise songs.

    i just started my walk in Christ.

    BUT WHAT HAPPENED DID NOT MAKE ME THINK THAT WALKING WITH GOD IS A MISTAKE.

    it just made me realize that we are all sinners.
    God knows i have worst lies but i doubt if i will ever have the courage to confess them in public. i admire him for that. i firmly believes that it was God who moved him to confess such.

    it will make me go to church more.
    it will make praise God more.
    i’ll continue to play their songs in my mp3.
    and most of all, i’ll pray for him and his family.

  13. It’s true, Bethany. You’d think that this would negatively affect the way we view Mike and the church, and possibly our relationships with God. At first, I was stunned and angry in a way. But, then I realized much the same thing as “Quinton”. King David fell a mighty fall and suffered the consequences. God still called him a man after His own heart. God also calls for forgiveness. Who am I to not forgive? So many verses in the Bible speak of forgiving our brothers… it strikes Godly-fear in my heart to imagine the consequences of not forgiving. If God could forgive someone like me and you and everyone else in this world, I would be a fool to not forgive those who do make terrible mistakes. The best thing we can do at this point is turn to God and pray for those who have been affected. For anyone who is struggling with their relationship in this, all I can say is “God loves you no matter what you’ve gone through or done. He has forgiven me for everything. He is my Healer, my Savior, my King, and my Comforter. In all things, I will praise Him. In all trials and testings and rising up and bringing down of leaders and kings, I will choose to follow my Jesus, because He has never let me down.”

  14. It’s truly beautiful to see that we as Christians can come together to forgive and to pray for those who are hurting and lost. In this generation and time where people find humor in cruelty and seek to destroy one another we must be the light to show that there is still some goodness left. This is what Christianity is all about right? We stand together in Christ and help each other up when someone falls. I hope everyone can sincerely pray for Mike but lets not stop there. We have to pray for this sick world. The song healer really meant a lot to me because I have gone through 3 surgeries because of a tumor. I’m not gonna stop listening cause of this. Lets keep fighting for the glory of God. Lets stand together in this sick generation and truly pray for healing over our people.

  15. You guys are great. So many people have been judgmental about mike and what he did. You guys just want to see him through this. Thats where God can make Good of our bad. Him without sin cast the first stone. Jesus said that because he knew that the so called righteous people, jewish leaders “Men of God” were not without sin. Question one: who is without sin? second question: how is sin measured? third question: who were Jesus’ friends? I think you can all answer these questions. The problem is Mike had profile, no one would care if you were caught watching porn (lets be honest guys who hasn’t?)….(lier) lol If what Mike said was true (that Jesus told him in a dream “the truth will set you free”) we have to trust that God knows what he is doing! I believe porn is ruining young guys lives everyday, this could help young people realise that! At the end of the day Mike didn’t write that song because he was dying from a physical disease but a spiritual one, one that was tormenting him everyday. Mike knows that Jesus isn’t just our physical healer He is our all! I will continue singing the song in church as I believe that is the reason he wrote, and I believe there are people in the same situation as him right now who need to hear and proclaim. I have to say I couldn’t tell my dad that I watched porn never mind the whole world. Respect Mike Guglielmucci at 28 its not over God restores the years the locust have eaten keep your eyes on Jesus he is your healer. Remember never confuse falling with failing!!!

  16. There were articles about pledges that the donations woulde be returned, but now everything has gone quiet and somehow we don’t hear anything anymore. Is the fraud really going to return the money? I don’t think any donations would have been spent on his basic living costs.”Lavish” – perhaps, but not basic. After all he was on a handsome salary from his church as a pastor!

    September 14, 2008 at 11:13 pm

  17. @Paul: Early on, it sounded like everything was going to be done very quiet.

    AoG Australia (ACC), The Edge Church, Hillsong and Planetshakers’ PR and media liason teams went into full swing trying to silence the media.

    ACC approached web-sites ranking for Mike Guglielmucci’s name, and asked them to “change their content appropriately” (paraphrasing what I was told by a webmaster).

    Hillsong removed videos featuring Mike Guggs from YouTube by filling copyright infringement claims on those videos specifically.

    Planetshakers changed their web-site to remove any reference to Mike Guglielmucci and distance themselves from the drama.

    Speaking to the producer of Sunday Night Safran on Triple J, Planetshakers’ media liaison agreed to an interview on the strict condition that Mike Guglielmucci’s song “Healer” was not played as “Religious Song of the Week” – and then canceled the interview at the last minute claiming that Russell Evans was the only person who would speak on radio on behalf of Planetshakers and he was traveling to New Zealand

    [btw - Can anyone confirm that Russell Evans went to New Zealand on Thursday one fortnight ago?]

    Paul – everything’s going to be done quietly and behind closed doors with Mike Guggs.

    Unfortunately, this means no transparency and no accountability.

    We’re left in the dark on this one.

    That is a big fall.

    If you’re a believer, pray for the family, and pray for Mike Guglielmucci… It looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

    A: What mike done was wrong but he does not need to be resored in the eyes of man only in the eyes of god if God wants to use him again God will that is not up to man to decide.

    B: no fall is bigger than the other what mike done is no bigger that taking a Pen from work that is not urs. its all the same to God

    C: shouldn’t we be praying for healing its not docter he need its jesus he need to be put in the precence of jesus and let God do his work i,m fed up of christians Going to docters befor they Go to god Jesus is the only one that can heal him docters can not heal anyone they can only help the natural healing prosses and pump Drugs into ur body

  19. I live in Brazil, and I knew about Mike yesterday(I´m late, I know)…I was very sad.
    When I knew about his “sickness” I cried, I prayed for him…and now I know all that was a lie!
    But I reflected about it, and I don´t know why he did it, I really don´t know what´s passing in his head now, but what I should do — and what all we must do— is forgive and support..we fall, too: we lie, we get angry, we do chooses without God´s will…we can´t think we better than Mike, we don´t! We can´t think he´s not worthy of our forgiveness, because we all aren´t worthy of God´s forgiveness at all! And if we´re here, it´s just because God´s mercy, and we shouldn´t think we be able to judge: we aren´t.
    We can´t lose the main of be a Christian: love.
    So, before thinking so much about it, I can say:
    I love God;
    I need God;
    People fall;
    I fall;
    I need mercy;
    Everyone needs mercy;
    I need the people I love´s support;
    I need support;
    I need forgive if the person apologize or not;
    Fall when you are Christian is so hard, because the world are looking you everytime, ready to judge, but there´s something you can do to change world´s view: really rue and ask for forgiveness to everyone you reached with your wrong action;
    God is migthy to lift a broken heart;
    Yes, I´m still loving Mike´s songs;
    I love God´s move in Planetshakers and

    Nothing and no one can change it.

    I pray we all should get better and help others to get better, too; this is our calling: love.

    (hope you understand my poor English)

    Who will support Mike in his rehabilitation?

    Where will the money come from for Mike’s treatment?

    This question seems strange. What makes Danny different from any other person? He needs to go to work like other people (like those who worked and earned money to send to him in the past).

    Take care of and provide for your family and attend treatment in the evenings (after you finish working – like anyone else would have to).
